In his thesis presentation Dr. ÖZER examines the settlement and trial decisions of the courts in different regions in the early 19th century Ottoman Empire in a comparative perspective by using the concepts in modern law and economics literature. The main question of the thesis is how the socioeconomic status of the litigants (gender, title, religion, social status, income level, etc.) affect their decisions to go to trial and court’s decision on who wins the case. Dr. ÖZER made predictions by using 2.827 observations obtained from the records of four courts in the center and in the provinces (Galata, Üsküdar, Konya and Kütahya) by using “the selection hypothesis” and “the 50% win rate” assumption based on law and economics; and tested these predictions by using probit and regression analyses in addition to descriptive statistics.
In the seminar, whose atendees were academicians, master’s and PhD students in additon to the ASEAD Board members, Prof. Dr. İbrahim ÖRNEK, the Chairman of ASEAD, emphasised the importance of multi disciplinary studies and thanked Dr. ÖZER for such a thesis that required mastering in the language of Ottoman, law and history; and sharing this study at a Thursday Seminar with the audience.
